Buttress removal is the smoothing of a bony thickening on the jaw during preparation for prosthetics. An uneven bony contour stops a denture from seating snugly and evenly, and can rub the mucosa and cause sore spots. Under local anaesthesia the surgeon lifts the mucosa, precisely trims and levels the excess bone with a piezo device, then smooths the surface and sutures. This forms an even bony bed on which the denture sits stably and comfortably. Healing takes 2-3 weeks.
